mosaic head using ceramic transfers on tiles

Just started this mosaic using ceramic transfers fired onto tiles which i then cut into circles. For the face though i used a laser transfer (decal). No plan on this one, curious as to how it turns out when it´s finnished.

Oldesloe´s Miraculous Mud – Ceramic Mural

 Posted on November 22, 2017

ceramic tile, one of the 70 tiles used for the mural

In 2017 the county of Stormarn celebrated it´s 150 year Jubilee. As part of the celebrations I initiated a interdisiplinary art/history project at the TMS grammer school in Bad Oldesloe, working together with an A-level art class. The 10 pupils researched and investigated the history of Bad Oldesloe during it´s earlier years as a renowned spa town. Using paper collage as their medium they produced small art works.
The Large 200cm x 140cm tile Mural, depicting a selection of the student´s collages, will finally be presented to the public.
Using digital ceramic transfers the collage images were fired onto frost resistant tiles. On the 1st December the framed mural can be seen installed onto the exterior wall of the district´s archive and department of culture building in Bad Oldesloe and will be unveiled at 10 am. At the same time, in the same buildng we´ll be opening the accompanying exhibition at which the pupil´s original paper collages can be seen. The exhibition will run til 5th January 2018. This project was kindly supported by Kreis Stormarn.

If you visit Documenta 14 in Kassel this year you might want to get a rare glimpe of this glass mosaic, which for the last 40 years has been hidden from the outside world. The 14 meter long illuminated mosaic, by German artist Dieter von Andrian (1925-1922) is fixed to an interior wall of a closed down, otherwise shut off to the public, underground tram station situated in front of Kassel´s main railway station. Sadly parts of the mosaic have been vandalised but tere is talk of the town removing the mosaic so it can be repaired and then installed at a new location. But in the meantime when Documenta comes to an end mid September the tunnel and its mosaic will once again be sealed off from the world above.
